The Little Hands Program 2026 has officially concluded, and our hearts are full of gratitude.
For two inspiring weeks, 185 children in Malapascua joined us to discover that growing food is more than planting seeds—it is about growing hope, responsibility, and a love for nature.
Together, these young gardeners planted more than 4,000 vegetable seedlings, including kangkong, eggplant, cucumber, string beans, and ampalaya. Every child learned the basics of gardening through hands-on activities, storytelling, and practical lessons about caring for plants.
But the learning did not stop after the seminar.
Each participant brought home a heart-shaped seed pot with one important assignment: grow your seed until it produces 3 leaves!
Children watered their plants every day, patiently watching the first leaves emerge. When their seedlings reached the required stage, they proudly submitted photos as proof of their hard work. As a reward for their dedication, they received school supplies through our Young Gardener Awards, celebrating not only successful plant growth but also the values of perseverance, patience, and responsibility.
To ensure that the impact extends beyond the summer camp, Blue Ocean Alliance also began distributing the thousands of seedlings grown during the program to households throughout Malapascua. Families who still maintain their Garden Towers received seedlings to replenish their gardens, while new households were invited to start growing vegetables at home.
Recipients also attended a Practical Gardening Seminar, where they learned:

Proper soil mixture for healthy plant growth

The life cycle of the five vegetables distributed

Watering and maintenance techniques

Organic gardening practices

How to harvest vegetables correctly for continuous production
Each household received a Harvest Tracker to record their planting dates and harvests. Our team will continue monitoring the community through follow-up visits in June, July, and August, allowing us to measure survival rates, harvest yields, and the long-term success of the project.
This year also marked another exciting milestone. We launched pilot projects to improve our Garden Tower Initiative, including testing a redesigned tower with a center pipe to improve drainage, aeration, composting, and nutrient distribution. We also introduced a new way to maintain the towers using organic materials found in the island.
We also established a partnership with the schools in the island to inspire more children to learn through hands-on gardening. We are honored to meet with the head of Logon Elementary School Ms. Levihane Cordero and Logon High School Ms. Estela Gedoquio as we turned over seedlings for their school's garden plots.
Little Hands was born from a simple belief: if children learn to grow food today, they will build healthier communities tomorrow.
What began as five Garden Towers in 2023 has grown into a movement that continues to inspire families across Malapascua. Every seed planted is an investment in food security, environmental stewardship, and the next generation of community leaders.
None of this would have been possible without our dedicated volunteers, community partners, parents, teachers, and supporters.

Although Little Hands 2026 has come to an end, our work is only beginning.
Over the coming months, we will continue visiting families, monitoring harvests, improving our Garden Tower designs, and finding new ways to strengthen food security in island communities.
